The Uganda Rugby Union (URU) has outlined plans to elevate international rugby in 2026, rolling out a robust calendar that prioritises both age-grade and senior competitions for men and women.

Last season ended on a high for the U-20 boys, with the Uganda Schools Select side impressing at the 2025 World Schools Festival in Abu Dhabi.

Despite facing challenges, the team rose to the occasion, particularly in the sevens format, giving the Union confidence to continue investing in youth development.

“Our main focus is the U-20 men’s 15s, who will host the U20 Barthés Trophy in Hoima. They will play in their division against Zambia, Côte d’Ivoire, and one more team yet to qualify. Zimbabwe, Kenya, and Namibia will also be here,” said URU CEO Isaac Lutwama.

The Union has also pledged greater emphasis on the women’s 15s after laying important groundwork last season. The immediate target is to avoid relegation from the Africa Women’s Cup.

“The other focus team for us is the women’s 15s. They will be the first team in action in May against South Africa, Kenya, and Madagascar. They need to maintain third place, but our target is to finish second. We want to compete strongly and see if we can beat Kenya,” Lutwama explained.

Improved performances by the women’s side are crucial, as maintaining their ranking would strengthen Uganda’s chances of qualifying for future World Rugby WXV competitions and enhance their prospects in upcoming Rugby World Cup qualifiers.

The national men’s sevens team will also receive a boost, with the Africa Cup scheduled for June. Uganda is targeting a return to the top, which would secure qualification for the Challenger Series after missing out this year.

The same ambition applies to the women’s sevens side. Uganda is set to host a Challenger Series circuit, and the Union is determined to field a competitive team on home soil.
