With the Uganda Open set to ignite Kabojja International School this weekend, the Uganda Table Tennis Association (UTTA) says the sport is entering a new phase of growth, driven by renewed confidence from its major partners.

On Friday, UTTA turned its engagement with Airtel Uganda, Lakhani Motors, and Sure Pay into a strategic show of unity, underscoring how corporate backing is shaping the future of table tennis in the country.

UTTA General Secretary Joseph Rukundo said the association is focused on elevating the championship into a regional powerhouse.

“The level of interest we’re receiving tells us the sport is ready for the next step,” Rukundo remarked.

“The sponsors have allowed us to think bigger, attract more players, and strengthen our structures.”

The optimism comes as this year’s Uganda Open has already attracted more than 200 competitors, including international players from Kenya, one of the strongest turnouts in recent years.

For Lakhani Motors, Friday’s event was an opportunity to reaffirm its commitment to the fast-growing sport.

“Table tennis is attracting a new generation of athletes,” said Sales Manager Ayub Quresni. “We want to be part of that journey and help shape a competitive environment for young talent.”

Airtel Uganda echoed the same belief in the sport’s momentum. “We are not just sponsoring an event; we’re supporting a sport with huge potential,” explained Public Relations Manager David Birungi.

“Our investment is aimed at creating long-term impact and inspiring more young players.”

Sure Pay’s Marketing and Communication Manager Ibrahim Muyombya emphasized the importance of consistency in sports development. “We intend to stay involved and contribute to creating opportunities for athletes across the country,” he noted.

As teams prepare to battle for trophies, medals, and cash prizes over two action-packed days, UTTA believes this edition of the Uganda Open marks a significant step toward professionalizing table tennis and expanding its footprint on the regional calendar.
