Uganda Open revival showcases passion, talent, and growth in table tennis

The long-awaited Uganda Open made its grand return today at Kabojja International School, reigniting passion and competition in the country’s table tennis scene after nine years of absence.

Uganda Table Tennis Association (UTTA) president and tournament director Cyrus Mark Muwanga praised the renewed intensity and hunger on display, noting that the event has not only attracted a huge turnout but also raised the bar for local competition.

“With over 200 players registered, the level is impressively high,” Muwanga said during the opening ceremony.

“We’ve created room for top athletes to compete alongside emerging players so the younger ones can learn, gain exposure, and grow. This return is a massive boost for the sport.”

Kabojja International School, the host of the championship, reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing holistic learners through sport. Principal and CEO Sam Turya emphasized that athletics are central to the school’s values.

“Sports are not just extras, they shape character, discipline, resilience, and mental well-being,” Turya explained. “We want our students actively involved and benefiting from environments that encourage teamwork and personal growth.”

Turya also highlighted the school’s investment in modern sports facilities, including a football pitch and multi-sport courts, stressing that such infrastructure strengthens student development and broadens opportunities.

The Uganda Open concludes tomorrow, with more than sh8 million in prize money to be awarded, alongside medals, trophies, and certificates for standout performers.
