Uganda has unveiled a formidable 26-member squad set to compete at the 2026 World Athletics Cross-Country Championships scheduled for January 10 in Tallahassee, Florida, USA.
Two-time defending champion Jacob Kiplimo, who is aiming to cement his legacy with a historic third consecutive world title, will lead the team evenly split between senior and junior runners.
Kiplimo, one of Uganda’s most celebrated athletes, is expected to headline the championship as he seeks a triumphant send-off before shifting his focus fully to road running.
His presence not only boosts Uganda’s medal hopes but also brings invaluable experience to a team brimming with young, ambitious talent.
Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) publicity secretary Abdallah Muhammed expressed confidence in the selected athletes, emphasizing that the team is stronger and more prepared than the one that competed in 2024.
“We have fielded a full team this year, both in the junior and senior categories,” Muhammed said. “The athletes selected have shown exceptional form not only at the national cross-country trials but also in every major event they competed in throughout the year. It will not be surprising if we win or finish second in this year’s edition”.
Uganda will be looking to improve on its performance at the last World Cross-Country Championships held in 2024 in Budapest, Hungary. In that edition, Uganda finished third overall with four medals: one gold and three bronze. Kenya dominated the event with a haul of ten medals; six gold, two silver, and two bronze while Ethiopia secured second place, continuing their long-standing rivalry with Uganda on the global stage.
This year’s team selection signals Uganda’s determination not only to defend its individual crown through Kiplimo but also to challenge for top honors in team events across all categories. The depth in both the men’s and junior divisions offers renewed optimism for a higher podium finish.
The athletes are currently undergoing training in Kapchorwa with the federation promising full support to ensure optimum performance in Florida.
“With seasoned stars leading the charge and rising talents eager to make their mark, Uganda heads into the 2026 championships with quiet confidence and clear ambition”. Muhammed confirmed.
