The Uganda Kho Kho Federation (UKF) has trained and graduated 37 coaches, games teachers, and sports officers in Kho Kho as a sport discipline in the Teso region.

The milestone followed a one-day training program conducted at Soroti Sports Grounds in Soroti City on Tuesday, April 27, 2026.

Kho Kho Coordinator for Teso sub-region, Joseph Opio, commended the participants for their tireless effort in acquiring knowledge on the sport.

"The training we are attending today is part of the Kho Kho Federation of Uganda's plan to roll out nationwide training programmes for physical education teachers, following the sport's official introduction into schools," Opio explained.

According to Opio, Kho Kho has been included in the Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) 2026 activity calendar, marking a significant milestone in the development of the fast-growing sport in the country.

John Bosco Omugen, Kumi Municipal Sports Officer, appreciated the Kho Kho Federation of Uganda for ensuring the sport is brought down to the local level.

"I have gained a lot of expertise from this training. We previously had these games during the olden days where we called it 'tach', but now this new format is interesting," said Omugen.

Kho Kho Federation General Secretary Mustapha Nsubuga said the training focuses on equipping teachers with the skills, rules, and competencies required to teach and officiate the game.

"Physical education teachers must be ready for this training because, in some parts of the country, it will be their first exposure to Kho Kho," Nsubuga said.

"We want the sport to spread across the whole country, which is why we used Kyambogo College as a starting point. It was part of our pilot programme, where we conducted initial coaching training before expanding to other regions."

Nsubuga added that introducing Kho Kho in schools will diversify the sporting disciplines available to students and provide them with opportunities to engage in a new and exciting sport.

"Ugandan students will now have the chance to try another sport. Considering that Uganda is performing well at continental and global levels, students will be very excited to embrace Kho Kho," he said.

Kho Kho has been confirmed as a demonstration sport at the upcoming USSSA Ball Games II, to be hosted at Sacred Heart Secondary School in Gulu.

The event presents another crucial platform to expand the sport's reach, inspire more participants, and strengthen its case for full competitive status within school sports structures.
