For the first time in history, Uganda will participate in a FIFA World Cup tournament.
The Uganda U-17 national football team, known as the Uganda Cubs, has qualified for the 2025 FIFA U-17 World Cup, which will be held in Qatar.
The official draw took place on Sunday, May 25, at the Raffles Hotel in Doha. Uganda has been placed in Group K alongside football powerhouses France, Chile, and Canada.
This marks a monumental achievement for Ugandan football. The 2025 edition of the tournament is also historic, as it will be the first to feature 48 teams, divided into 12 groups. Matches are scheduled to run from November 3 to 27, with games hosted at the Aspire Zone complex in Al Rayyan and the final set for the iconic Khalifa International Stadium.
Uganda secured its place in the tournament by defeating The Gambia 2–1 in a decisive playoff during the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. Forward James Bogere was the star of the match, scoring both goals in a performance that showcased composure and class.
Despite conceding early, Uganda rallied. Bogere equalized just before halftime after a clever through ball split the Gambian defense. In the second half, the Cubs intensified their attack, with Bogere netting the winner in the 78th minute from an assist by Yusuf Ssekamatte.
Head coach Brian Ssenyondo and team manager Bashir Mutyaba are already in Qatar, where they participated in official meetings on Saturday, May 24, and attended the draw the following day.
Though viewed as underdogs, the Cubs are determined to leave a mark on the global stage and inspire a new era for Ugandan football.
