Uganda’s quest to return to the FIFA U-17 World Cup faces a stern test after the national U-17 side was drawn into a challenging Group B for the 2026 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

The draw, conducted on Wednesday at the CAF headquarters in Cairo, Egypt, placed the Uganda Cubs alongside West African heavyweights Cameroon and Ivory Coast, as well as Central African side Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The ceremony was led by Pyramids FC forward Fiston Mayele, Mali international Aliou Dieng, and Ceramica Cleopatra’s Ahmed Belhadji.

The grouping presents a daunting path for the Cubs, who must navigate a pool packed with traditionally strong youth football nations if they are to secure qualification for the global showpiece.

The tournament, scheduled to run from May 18 to June 2, will serve as the qualifying platform for the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar. To book a place, Uganda must either finish among the top two teams in the group or progress via the playoffs reserved for the best third-placed sides.

Coached by Ghanaian tactician Laryea Kingston, the Cubs have already entered residential camp as preparations intensify for the continental competition.

Uganda heads into the tournament with growing confidence following a historic breakthrough campaign. The Cubs secured their maiden FIFA U-17 World Cup qualification last year after edging Gambia 2-1 in a playoff match during the 2025 AFCON, which was also staged in Morocco.

At the World Cup in Qatar, Uganda exceeded expectations with a remarkable run to the Round of 16. The team recorded notable victories, including a hard-fought 1-0 win over France and a disciplined triumph against Senegal in the knockout stage. Their journey, however, ended in heartbreak after a penalty shootout defeat to Burkina Faso.
