In an attempt to improve cricket talents in Soroti city schools, Soroti Cricket Academy in partnership with Uganda Cricket Association has summoned 40 coaches for the cricket coaching course.

A one-day (theory and practical) course that attracted primary and secondary school teachers in both government and non-government-aided schools was conducted at Pioneer Primary School.

“Our goal is to have schools play cricket in all educational institutions in the region, that is why we opted to have you trained on skills and have knowledge in the sport,” said Emmanuel Twijukwe, a Soroti Academy coach.

According to Tweijukwe, the game of cricket is not played in many regions in the county because most sportsmen and women have not received training.

“Now you have received the basics on cricket, I am sure that you will use the acquired knowledge to spread the game in your schools and communities,” Nicholas Opio, the District Sports Officer said at the closure of the training.

Opio believes that cricket can only be realised in the region if training is conducted regularly.

"It’s important that the partnership between Uganda Cricket Association and Soroti Cricket Academy extends handball to various schools and institutions so that the game can progress” he adds

Felix Musana, the Soroti Cricket Academy chairperson said the training is intended to equip primary, and secondary, institutions and locals on the basics of fostering cricket talents at all levels.

"Please keep the candle burning, professionalism is the only way to go. Capacity building is one core value Soroti Cricket Academy highly rates for transformation of the game,” he added.

According to Musana, the full turn-up in training will also help Soroti schools to bond as a group that will be looking at winning the national trophies.

Francis Aurut, the Soroti games and sports chairperson games thanked Soroti Cricket Academy for the timely training conducted which impacted teachers’ knowledge of the game of cricket.
