The Uganda Chess Federation (UCF) will usher in a new president this Sunday during its Annual General Meeting (AGM), following the retirement of current president Eng. Mwaka Emmanuel, who steps down after nine years at the helm of one of the country’s fastest-growing sports.
Eng. Mwaka, who assumed office in January 2017 after succeeding Vianney Luggya, has overseen a transformative era for chess in Uganda.
His leadership saw the federation restructure member clubs, introduce a new constitution, and elevate UCF from tier four to tier three under the National Sports Act, placing chess alongside sports such as boxing and netball in terms of national recognition.

Reflecting on his tenure, Mwaka highlighted Uganda’s dominance in continental amateur championships, winning the U2300 category four times and the U1700 category once, as well as securing bronze medals at the World Amateur Championships and the World Schools Team Championship.
“I have witnessed the successful organization of major international events such as Africa Juniors in 2017, Africa Schools in 2018, and our first team gold at the U16 Zone 4.2 Chess Championship in 2019, along with silver medals at Africa Juniors in 2017 and 2025,” Mwaka said.
He also strengthened technical capacity by training more than 10 new arbiters and instructors, while revitalizing the Father Grimes National Schools Championship, expanding participation from 12 teams to over 250.
Grassroots development flourished, with more than 1,000 players benefiting from educational bursaries and scholarships offered by universities, primary, and secondary schools.
Mwaka’s tenure was equally marked by financial discipline. He cleared federation debts exceeding 70 million Uganda shillings, leaving UCF debt-free and with accountable financial systems in place.
“More than a decade of challenges, including limited government funding, has taught me that sustainable growth comes from proper governance, innovation, and dedication to the sport,” he reflected.
As Eng. Mwaka steps down on November 30, 2025, his legacy of excellence, innovation, and commitment to chess in Uganda will be remembered. The stage is now set for a new leader to continue advancing the sport, with three candidates already expressing interest in the presidency. Elections will be held during Sunday’s AGM, marking a pivotal moment in Ugandan chess.
