The Uganda Hippos kicked off their U-20 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with a confident 3-0 victory over Ethiopia yesterday at the Azam Complex Stadium in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
First-half goals from Godfrey Ssekibengo in the 23rd minute and Swabir Mpasa in the 39th minute, along with a 90th-minute goal from Innocent Kisolo, sealed the win for Matia Lule’s team.
Lule expressed his satisfaction with the result, emphasizing the importance of starting the tournament with a win to build momentum and confidence for the team moving forward.
With this victory, Uganda now leads Group B on goal difference, edging out Burundi, who also secured three points with a 1-0 win over South Sudan in their opening match.
Uganda will return to action tomorrow against Burundi, with both teams aiming to secure a spot in the semifinals.
The Hippos are the defending champions of the CECAFA zone, having claimed the title in the previous edition after defeating South Sudan in Khartoum, Sudan.
