Uganda Athletics (UA) will mark this year’s International Women’s Day with a special women’s road race aimed at celebrating the role of women in sport and society.
The event, scheduled for Saturday, March 7, will feature two distance categories of 10km and 5km.
The race route will traverse key areas of Kampala, including Kololo, Wampewo and Lugogo, giving participants a chance to run through some of the city’s most vibrant neighborhoods.
Unlike traditional competitions, the Women’s Day run is open to all women regardless of age, profession or athletic background. Organizers have emphasized that the race is not about winning medals or setting records, but about unity, health and recognition of women’s contribution to national development.
UA General Secretary Beatrice Ayikoru described the initiative as a unique celebration that reflects the federation’s commitment to promoting women in athletics and beyond.
“This is not a competitive race but rather a celebration of how women have positively impacted society,” Ayikoru said. “Uganda Athletics loves and respects women, and we call upon all women to come out and celebrate with us through sport.”
Ayikoru added that the event is also meant to inspire more women and girls to embrace physical activity as part of their daily lives, highlighting athletics as a powerful tool for empowerment and well-being.
As Uganda joins the rest of the world in commemorating International Women’s Day, UA says the road race symbolizes women’s resistance, persistence and determination in the face of challenges. The federation believes that running together will send a strong message of solidarity while also promoting fitness and community spirit.
The Women’s Day road race is set to become one of UA’s signature outreach events, using athletics not only as a sport, but also as a platform to honor women’s achievements and encourage their continued involvement in all spheres of life.
