Two-wheel drive rally driver Timothy Gawaya has honoured his sponsor, Modern Tiles Company, in recognition of their support during his recent outing at the Safari Rally in Kenya.

"Competing in the Safari Rally is very expensive, but when you get support from a company like Modern Tiles, it becomes possible. I urge rally fans and the corporate world to support those who invest in our sport," Gawaya said.

The award was received by the company's director, Karan Raval, at their head office in Jinja, underlining the growing partnership between the driver and his backers.

"We are pleased to have worked with Gawaya. He delivered a commendable performance in Kenya and gave our brand excellent visibility. We look forward to continuing this partnership in the near future," Raval noted.

The Safari Rally, widely regarded as one of the toughest events on the World Rally Championship (WRC) calendar, once again tested both driver skill and machine endurance.

Unlike the previous edition, where he competed in a Seat Ibiza, Gawaya tackled the 2026 event in a Toyota Starlet. The switch proved effective as he powered through the punishing terrain to secure top honors in his class.

The Ugandan driver was quick to acknowledge the vital role played by his sponsors. "It was my first time working with Modern Tiles, and they did not hesitate when I approached them. Their support played a big role in making this effort possible," he added.

Gawaya continues to break new ground for Ugandan rallying. Last year, he became the first Ugandan driver in the 2WD category to compete at the iconic Safari Rally, further cementing his place among the country's rising motorsport talents.

"The WRC is the pinnacle of motorsport, and competing alongside the best in the world is a special feeling," Gawaya said.

He joins a growing list of Ugandan drivers who have taken on the demanding event. This year's edition featured a strong Ugandan presence, including debutant Oscar Ntambi alongside experienced competitors Duncan Mubiru and reigning African champion Yasin Nasser.

As Ugandan participation on the global stage continues to expand, Gawaya's achievement highlights both the steady rise of local talent and the critical role of corporate support in driving the sport forward.
