Trevor Noah and Joseph Opio enjoyed seven fruitful years on The Daily Show. Now, the South African comedian and Ugandan writer are expanding their creative collaboration beyond Comedy Central.

Noah and Opio are set to premiere a new documentary on American TV screens this Friday, December 1. Titled The World According to Football, the five-part docuseries drops on the first anniversary of the 2022 World Cup held in Qatar.

"Trevor and I eat, sleep and breathe football," Opio revealed. "We have traveled to every World Cup since we met. We also regularly fly to Europe to watch Premier League and La Liga matches. To us, this docuseries is the perfect marriage of business and pleasure."

The World According to Football will spotlight a different country in each episode — Brazil, the U.S., France, Qatar and the U.K. Through a football lens, it will explore how every culture wrestles with hot-button global issues like women’s rights, racism, income inequality, mental health and labor rights. 

Opio wrote all five episodes of the docuseries while Noah narrated them.

"Trevor and I had a ton of fun making it," Opio added. "Our passion for comedy is only matched by our addiction to football. This documentary is our love letter to The Beautiful Game."

Opio has written over 1,170 episodes of The Daily Show — winning multiple Emmy Award nominations. But The World According to Football marks his first partnership with Noah since the South African superstar left Comedy Central.

 
It also sees Opio return to his sports writing roots. Before branching into standup comedy, the New York-based comic worked as an award-winning journalist on New Vision's sports desk.
