The Uganda Primary Schools Sports Association (UPSSA), in conjunction with the Ministry of Education and Sports, has confirmed Tororo District as the host of the 2026 National Primary Schools Athletics and Special Needs Education (SNE) Championships.

The event is scheduled to run from May 4 to May 12, 2026, with Rock High School in Tororo Municipality serving as the main venue.

Gilbert Orikiriza, Desk Officer for Primary Schools at the Ministry of Education and Sports, confirmed that Tororo was selected following a final inspection led by ministry officials in collaboration with UPSSA and key stakeholders.

“During the inspection period, we found that Rock High School in Tororo Municipality met the minimum requirements needed to host the national competition,” Orikiriza said.

He added that the local organizing team has been advised to work closely with the national committee to ensure the success of the championship.

Michael Nalugoda, Second Vice President of UPSSA in charge of competitions, welcomed the decision, emphasizing the significance of hosting a national event in the region.

“Hosting such a national competition in Tororo is a great achievement for the entire region. It provides an opportunity for the community to interact with people from across the country who will come for the championship,” Nalugoda said.

He acknowledged the efforts of local governments and stakeholders in preparing for the event. “We have been working hard to ensure that everything is in place, and we look forward to supporting Tororo in making the event a success,” he added.

Francis Owori, Tororo Municipal Sports Officer, provided an update on readiness, stating that preparations are now at 90 percent.

According to Owori, King George Stadium has been identified as the main venue for athletics, with additional facilities in nearby schools also set to be utilized.

“We are currently finalizing accommodation arrangements in various institutions within Tororo that have been reserved to host athletes and officials. We anticipate hosting no fewer than 6,000 people, including athletes, coaches, officials, and spectators,” Owori explained.

“Our teams are working to ensure that all preparations are in their final stages, and we are committed to delivering the best hosting experience compared to other regions in Uganda,” he added.

John Peter Okoell, UPSSA Eastern Region Representative, confirmed that the Tororo District local government is demonstrating strong preparedness ahead of the championship.

“Tororo District is fully equipped with the necessary facilities and infrastructure. The district has adequate accommodation options and suitable playing fields for various sports,” Okoell said.

He noted that Tororo was chosen based on several factors, including the availability of sports facilities, the enthusiasm of local officials, and the district’s strategic location.

“Holding the championships here is an opportunity to showcase the region’s development progress and foster greater participation in sports among young learners,” Okoell added.
