Excitement is building in Tororo District as it prepares to host the USSSA National Ball Games II Championship for the first time in history. Scheduled for July 10–19, 2025, the tournament will be co-hosted by St. Peter’s College Tororo and Tororo Girls’ School.
Luke Emuron, the headteacher at St. Peter’s College, expressed immense pride in welcoming Uganda’s secondary school sports fraternity to the region.
“We are grateful to the USSSA Secretariat for entrusting us with this prestigious event. It’s a moment of great excitement and pride, especially given our strong history in school athletics,” Emuron told Vision Sports.
He added that the school aims to restore its dominance in athletics, a longstanding tradition in Tororo and Eastern Uganda, and is keen to see emerging talent in volleyball, basketball, and badminton. Emuron also encouraged visiting teams to cooperate with the local business community to help make the event a success.
Beatrice Akware Lumonya, headteacher at Tororo Girls’ School, said co-hosting the games has fueled her school’s ambition to win a national trophy.
“We became champions at the zonal level. Now, as hosts, our eyes are set on the national title,” she said.
Boaz Ziana Turyamuhebwa, games teacher at Bukedea Comprehensive School, expressed confidence in his team’s ability to defend their title, crediting the players' hard work and dedication.
Dominic Maloba, Chairperson of USSSA-Bukedi Zone, applauded the efforts of the Local Organizing Committee led by Emuron and Lumonya.
“They’ve shown exemplary leadership, backed by teams that have mobilized resources, engaged communities, and prepared the necessary infrastructure. With consistent oversight from USSSA and the Ministry of Education, everything is on track,” Maloba said.
He called on the community to attend in large numbers, noting that the event is not just a sporting competition, but also a boost for the local economy.
The championship will feature boys and girls competing in a wide range of sports, including: Netball, Basketball 3×3, Rugby 7s, Handball, Lacrosse, Mind Games, Athletics, Volleyball, Beach Soccer & Beach Volleyball, Age-category games (U16 & U14) and Dance Sport.
