 The masters' race at the National Athletics Cross Country Championship excited the fans most as participants proved that they were still on form.

The 4km race attracted former elite Athletes including Stephen Kiprotich, Hellen Chemutai (36 years old), and Irene Chemusto (51 years old) from Prisons Athletics Club.

In the 4km women, 36-year-old Vanis Chemutai of Prisons ran 15 minutes,55.8 seconds to win the race and was followed by teammate Hellen Chemutai, 36years (16:18.0) and Irene Chemusto, 51years (17:36.8) who came second and third respectively.

In the men’s category, UPDF’s Francis B Musani won the race after posting 13minutes 9.4 seconds while Michael Yeko (Kwen) 13:13.1 and Nathan Chepsikor Yesho (Police) 13:21.8 came second and third respectively a head of Stephen Kiprotich who came seventh with a time of 17minutes,54.7 seconds.

The masters were competing to be selected for the Africa Masters cross country championship due February 25 in Tunisia this year.

Uganda Athletics Federation president Dominic Otuchet lauded the masters for the class exhibited and urged all others to join them because the masters' category is now on the international calendar.

“Coming into this event is more than just competing but you inspire many to join the sport and encourage the young athletes to stay focused,” Otuchet said.
