Uganda's U-17 women's national team, the Teen Cranes, face a decisive challenge after a 1–1 draw against Kenya U-17 in the first leg of their FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup qualifiers played in Kampala on Friday.

The tie remains perfectly balanced ahead of the return leg scheduled for next Friday at Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi, kicking off at 3:00 pm East African Time.

The Teen Cranes started strongly and took the lead in the 13th minute through Shadia Nabirye, who finished calmly to reward Uganda's bright opening spell.

For long periods, the Teen Cranes looked in control, but Kenya—who featured at the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in the Dominican Republic—grew into the match after halftime. Emily Adhiambo struck in the 60th minute to level the contest.

Uganda's head coach, Sheryl Ulanda Botes, admitted the tie now demands a more clinical approach going forward.

"We must score goals in the return leg and stay disciplined defensively because we cannot afford to concede. Home advantage matters, and the away goals rule could decide qualification for the overall tie," she said.

She also emphasized the structure of the competition and how fine margins decide progression.

"Our equation is simple but demanding: score in Nairobi, stay compact, and avoid conceding, because one lapse could end our World Cup dream," she added.

From an opinion standpoint, Uganda's biggest concern is not performance but efficiency. The Teen Cranes created enough chances to win the first leg comfortably, but failing to keep a clean sheet means they now carry pressure into a hostile Nairobi atmosphere. With the away goals rule in effect, Kenya's single goal in Kampala could prove decisive if the second leg ends in another draw.

Uganda reached this stage after a dominant 6–1 aggregate victory over Zimbabwe, showing they have both attacking strength and structure. However, unlike Zimbabwe, Kenya offer higher resistance and experience, having played on the global stage in 2024.

The CAF qualification system remains unforgiving. The CAF African U-17 Women's World Cup qualifiers are played in a three-round knockout format on a home-and-away basis, with aggregate scores deciding who advances. Teams progressing from the second round move into a final qualifying stage, where four African nations will earn spots at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup.

Africa will have five representatives at the tournament hosted by Morocco, scheduled from 17 October to 7 November 2026. This marks the 10th edition of the competition and the third time it is held on African soil. Morocco becomes the second Arab nation to host after Jordan in 2016, while defending champions North Korea lifted their record fourth title in 2025.
