Team Uganda will today, Monday, August 11, be officially flagged off for the 22nd edition of the Federation of East African Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSSA) Games, set to take place in Kakamega, Kenya.
The flag-off ceremony will be presided over by the State Minister for Sports, Peter Ogwang, at the Lugogo Grounds. The prestigious regional championship will bring together over 1,500 athletes competing across 16 sporting disciplines.
Hajji Twahil Kiteezaala, the 1st Vice President of the Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA), confirmed Uganda’s readiness during the official draws held last Thursday at the USSSA head offices in GNS Plaza, Old Kampala.
“Uganda is prepared to present athletes across all 16 disciplines: Football (soccer), Rugby (7s and 15s), Volleyball, Basketball (5x5 and 3x3), Netball, Hockey, Tennis, Badminton, Table Tennis, Athletics, Swimming, Scrabble, Chess, Cricket, and Beach Soccer,” Kiteezaala stated.
He emphasized Uganda’s determination to defend its title, having dominated nearly every category during last year’s three-week event hosted on home soil.
Sam Odong, Assistant Commissioner for Physical Education at the Ministry of Education and Sports, highlighted the significance of this year’s championship, which runs from August 12 to 23. He noted that the tournament marks a major return to Kenya after nearly a decade, with the last edition hosted in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, back in 2016.
“The FEASSSA Games have evolved into a regional spectacle, celebrating talent, culture, and camaraderie among East African nations. This year, six countries—Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, and South Sudan—will field their top secondary school athletes,” Odong said.
Kakamega County, renowned for its vibrant sports culture and passionate fans, will host the games across multiple venues including Bukhungu Stadium, MMUST Grounds, Kakamega High School, Mukumu Boys High School, and other selected schools.
This year’s edition will feature 16 disciplines, with beach soccer making its debut—an exciting addition aimed at diversifying sports offerings and aligning with global trends.
