St. Michael High School Ssonde etched their name in history over the weekend after clinching their first-ever Mukono regional boys’ basketball championship title at Seeta University grounds.
In a tightly contested final, St. Michael edged title contenders Seeta High A Compass 35–32 to spark wild celebrations.
Seeta had started strongly, taking the first quarter 12–5, but St. Michael gradually fought back, trimming the deficit to just one point at halftime (20–19) before taking control in the decisive moments to seal a historic win.

Their path to the title was equally impressive. They eliminated defending champions St. Cyprian High School Kyabakadde in a thrilling semifinal, winning 42–28 in a match that kept fans and officials fully engaged. Seeta High A Compass had earlier booked their final spot by beating Seeta High Main Campus 50–38 in an all-Seeta semifinal clash.
Kyabakadde later settled for third place after Seeta High Main Campus failed to show up for the playoff.
St. Michael coach Cyrus Mponye praised his players’ determination in a highly competitive tournament.
“The competition was really high. Every team improved in their style of play, but we used our chances well and we were lucky,” Mponye said.
Seeta High A coach Jerome Kasingabalya also acknowledged St. Michael’s triumph, admitting the finalists made the difference in execution.
“They deserved to win; they executed their chances better than us. On another day we could have taken it,” he said.
In the girls’ category, Seroma Christian High School successfully defended their title with a dominant 45–22 win over Naalya SS, while Kyabakadde finished third after defeating Seeta High 33–12.
All boys’ semifinalists secured qualification for this year’s National Ball Games I, which will be hosted by Seroma Christian High School in Mukono. Forest Hill College will take the fifth slot, while the girls’ category will be represented by three schools.
Mukono zone sports officer Richard Muhumuza urged schools to maintain their competitive edge on the national stage as hosts.
“We performed well last year and now we want to do even better at the nationals since we are hosting this year,” Muhumuza said.
