St. Catherine Girls SS Kazo is determined to stage a strong comeback at the 2026 Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) competitions, according to games teacher Yoweri Abaho.

Speaking to Vision Sport, Abaho recalled the team’s painful exit in 2025, when Kawempe Muslim edged them 2-1 in the U-15 girls’ football semifinals at the National USSSA Ball Games II in Tororo Municipality.

Despite the setback, St. Cathrine Girls managed to secure third place after defeating Lugazi Girls 1-0 in the playoff at Tororo Technical Grounds.

Abaho emphasized that the Kazo-based school has returned to the drawing board to ensure they do not repeat last year’s trophy-less campaign.

“Our girls did very well during the district and regional competitions where we managed to win. We are now focused on building from those successes to achieve more at the national level,” he said.

Head coach Benson Onaikede echoed Abaho’s sentiments, noting that the setbacks have provided valuable lessons and reignited hunger within the squad.

“Last year was very disappointing for the girls. We had a good side but didn’t manage to win the national trophy. This year, our target is clear—we want the girls’ football trophy,” Onaikede explained.

He added that the experience has pushed the school administration to reorganize and strengthen the team, ensuring they bounce back stronger in 2026. The optimism, he said, stems from renewed hunger, improved structures, and growing leadership within the squad.

School headteacher Mayar Assumpta Awut highlighted the institution’s broader vision, pointing to sports as a pathway for student sponsorships and opportunities.

“So far, the school is doing well in sports. It’s just a few areas we are working on to accomplish our target of becoming a sporting icon in the region,” Awut said.

She further emphasized that as a Catholic-founded school, St. Cathrine Girls is committed to nurturing God-fearing students who can positively contribute to their communities.
