The Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA) has unanimously elected Special Olympics two gold medal winner, Larry Feni Graig as sports personality of June, beating three other nominees.

At the Nile Special - USPA monthly meeting at Imperial Royale Hotel, Graig who also turns up for the national swimming team beat the Cricket Cranes that won the inaugural Africa T-20 championship by one run in Nairobi, and Joshua Cheptegei who finished second in the Lausanne Diamond League in 5,000m in a time of 12:41.61.

Also on the lineup was the crew of Yassin Nasser with Ali Katumba that won the Kabalega Rally and Jacob Kiplimo who finished second in the Oslo Diamond League in 12:41.73.

USPA also commended Irene Nakalembe for winning the 66th Asantehene Open at the Royal Golf Club Kumasi for her first Professional win, and four days later finishing second in the 23rd Open Cote D'ivoire Final Ladies.

USPA president Al Sayed Moses Lubega said that it was just worth it for the members to vote for Graig after winning on the biggest platform among all the Uganda sportsmen in June.

He won the gold medals in 25m freestyle and 50m breaststroke.

“The summer Special Olympics was a great event and Graig to excel was not a small fit. He built the name for Uganda that came out of the games in Berlin with five medals. He did not only win this time but also the consistency because in the same games in Dubai in 2019 he won three gold medals in swimming,” noted Lubega.

His win also prompted USPA to grant his coach Ezra Kalari the supportive award for June.

The young talent award went to Uganda U-16 women's basketball, Silverbacks beat cricket Lorna Anyait by 200-185 points.

The Silverbacks qualified for the Africa U16 Afro-basketball championship after winning two games in the regional competition in Kigali last month while the 15-year-old Anyait was hailed for good performance in the Kwibuka Tournament in Kigali where Uganda finished second.
