After a stellar performance at the 2026 Fr. Grimes National Schools Chess Championship, Sister Miriam Duggan Primary School has sent a squad of 28 players to the 17th African Youth Chess Championship, which starts in Kampala.

The school’s coach, Patrick Mukasa, who is also the proprietor of Kamwokya Teens Chess Club and Academy (KTCCA), where all the players are based, confirmed the development.

The school made history after both the boys’ and girls’ teams won the annual Fr. Grimes National Schools Chess Championship that concluded last week at Ntare School.

All the players train through KTCCA. Mukasa expressed gratitude for his decision to field the girls’ team for the first time at the school championship, saying it gave the players confidence and exposure.

At Ntare School, the boys remained unbeaten throughout the nine rounds, collecting the maximum 27 points in the open category, while the girls amassed 25 points after conceding only one draw.

“This year we also gave an opportunity to the girls. I am happy that we emerged champions in both categories. Focus is now on the African Youth Chess Championship,” Mukasa noted.

Juliet Asaba (14), the current national women’s champion who also won silver at last year’s continental championship in Zimbabwe, will be joined by Olivia Asiimwe to spearhead the girls’ squad. The girls’ team also includes promising under-8 players Jacinta Mbabazi, Jemimah Namakula, and Patricia Nabyalu, who all impressed at Ntare.

In the boys’ category, Mukasa is banking on players such as Ronald Wabwire, Daniel Odokonyero, Trevor Tumukunde, Elvis Tumusiime, and Francis Tumusiime—all of whom completed the nine rounds at Ntare unbeaten.

In addition to the trophies and medals, both teams also walked away with solar panels donated by Bank of Baroda to the champions of the Fr. Grimes National Schools Chess Championship.
