Sippi Trekkers won by 4 wickets
The Lyca Women’s Super T20 tournament concluded with Sipi Trekkers taking a four wickets victory over Bujjagali Rafters in a pulsating final at Lugogo oval on Monday.
Captained by Janet Mbabazi, the Sipi Trekkers overturned a poor start in the competition to grab the tournament on the final day.
“First of all, I would like to thank the girls for taking time out of school to come and play the tournament as for my team the Sipi Trekkers, in the beginning we were just getting to know each other. As captain it was all about getting to understand everyone’s ability. We struggled a lot at the beginning but we tried to keep things simple,” said Trekkers captain Janet Mbabazi.
The young players in all four teams showed that they have what it takes and it magnified the UCA’s decision to ensure the youngstars are exposed to high level competition like the Super T20.
The players ranged from U-15 to senior category. They were distributed into four sides named after some famous falls like the Itanda Kayakers, the Bujjagali Rafters, Sipi Trekkers and the Karuma Rapids.
Richard Okia UCA high performance chairman was complimentary of the effort from all the players especially the girls who are looking to be future Victoria Pearls.
“We thought we could get a group of ladies and girls who could make it to the national team. We are making the kind of high-performance pathway that can take you to the national team. All of you here are on the list for the national team. Even if you are just 15 years old, you will find that this program has put you on the path to join the national team,” Okia told the players.
Rita Musamali was voted best batter with 237 runs, Ariokot won best bowler with 14 wickets while Immaculate Nakisuyi was the MVP.
