2025 Afrobasket Qualifiers

Today

Uganda v Cape Verde

The Uganda Silverbacks have plenty of reason for optimism. But they still have to go out and do the job.

Uganda face Cape Verde today in Group B of the 2025 Afrobasket qualifiers in Tripoli, Libya with high hopes of finishing a job that started in less-than-ideal circumstances a year ago.

Uganda finished 1-2 in the first leg of the qualifiers in Tunisia after assembling a significantly weaker roster than the one that travelled to Tripoli.

The preparations this time have also been significantly better, with a brief training camp in Egypt the highlight of Uganda’s buildup.

Mandy Juruni and his side will reflect on all those factors and consider that Uganda lost to Cape Verde by five points in the first-leg meeting.

While Uganda travelled to Libya with what is practically a new roster, Cape Verde have returned with eight of the players that played in the first leg. But among the incoming faces is the dangerous Ivan Almeida, a player Uganda need no introduction to.

But without the 7ft Edy Tavares in the Cape Verde squad, the scales are a lot more balanced, and the Silverbacks will feel the victory is up for grabs.

They need it anyways, as every game in the second leg is expected to be a toss-up.
