The final of the schools’ rugby league did not only give hope that there is talent in schools, but a challenge to Uganda Rugby Union to desist from taking the schools activities to grounds with pubs.

For the last decade, there has been no attendance of big crowds of school children in any of the finals played at both Legends and Kyadondo Rugby clubs.

Legends and Kyadondo have been buying trophies and also refreshments for referees to host the schools’ games.

However, there has been no final that a big crowd attended like that of this year’s final held at Makerere University graveyard.

Oscar Olaro, the former Uganda Rugby Union vice-president of technical noted that removing schools’ rugby from bars has given confidence to headteachers to allow students to come to support their teams.

“This is the way to go. In the future, schools should be hosting the finals, and this allows them to attract more fans, but also get an opportunity to interact with headteachers,” Olaro said.

He was supported by former rugby manager and national team coach Yayiro Kasasa Musisi who also feels there is a need to overhaul the entire school’s rugby leadership structure.

If the sport is to grow, the headteachers must be involved in the administration and policy-making of the sport.

In the final, Namilyango beat SMACK 28-5 in the U20, and SMACK beat Budo 12-0 in the U15 category.

Between 2010-2014, there were over 80 schools playing rugby in the country, how many are there today and what happened is the question the Uganda Rugby Union needs to answer.
