Bird conservationists under their umbrella organization, Avian Conservation Uganda, have announced a nationwide charity marathon titled “Run for Birds”, aimed at raising awareness about bird conservation while engaging communities, partners, and key wildlife stakeholders across Uganda.
The 10-kilometer run, officially launched last week, is scheduled for October 19 and will be held under the theme “Every Step Saves a Species.”
Founded in 2022, Avian Conservation Uganda is a nonprofit organization committed to protecting birdlife and their habitats through rescue operations, habitat restoration, and community-led conservation programs. The upcoming marathon is part of a broader campaign to educate the public on the ecological importance of birds, the threats they face, and the urgent need for collective action.
Speaking at the launch, event coordinator Matsiko Allan emphasized the growing challenges to bird conservation, including habitat loss, climate change, and poisoning.
“We call for stronger efforts and collaboration among all stakeholders. We cannot leave this responsibility to the Uganda Wildlife Authority alone,” Matsiko stated.
The Run for Birds marathon will begin and end at Sheraton Kampala Hotel, following a scenic route around Nakasero Hill and State House, before concluding back at the hotel.
