Reigning champions Vipers SC are within touching distance of an eighth Uganda Premier League title, needing just nine points from their remaining five matches to seal another triumphant campaign.
The Venoms, who have dominated domestic football by winning four of the last six league titles, currently sit comfortably at the summit with 58 points. They hold a commanding seven-point lead over their closest challengers, SC Villa, KCCA FC and Kitara FC, who are all tied on 51 points in what has turned into a tense battle for second place rather than the title itself.
What was expected to be a tricky encounter against UPPC Entebbe at St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende on Sunday instead underlined Vipers’ championship credentials. After a cagey first half, the hosts stepped up a gear in the second period, with experienced forward Yunus Sentamu leading the charge.
Sentamu struck twice in the 50th and 76th minutes, showcasing his predatory instincts, before substitute Gusto Mulongo added a third in the 81st minute to wrap up a convincing 3-0 victory.
Consistency has been the cornerstone of Vipers’ success this season. On the pitch, they remain unbeaten in the league, their only blemish coming via a controversial boardroom ruling.
The FUFA Disciplinary Panel docked the club three points after they were accused of failing to honour their opening fixture against Kitara during the chaotic early stages of the season, when the experimental three-round league format, later scrapped, sparked widespread criticism from clubs and fans.
In contrast, their title rivals have struggled to maintain steady form. KCCA, SC Villa and Kitara have all dropped crucial points along the way, allowing Vipers to steadily pull away.
Their inconsistency was most evident when bottom-placed Calvary stunned the chasing pack, holding Kitara to a goalless draw in Hoima before edging KCCA 1-0 in Midigo, Yumbe, results that significantly dented both sides’ ambitions.
Another key factor behind Vipers’ dominance has been their impressive squad depth. Head coach Ivan Minnaert has a wealth of options at his disposal, enabling him to rotate without compromising quality.
