Uganda Prisons Athletics Club long-distance runners Dan Kibet and Joy Cheptoyek emerged victorious at the National Cross Country Championships held at Mbale Golf Club in Mbale City.

Kibet won the 10km race in 28 minutes and 57 seconds, ahead of Uganda Police Athletics Club’s Keneth Kiprop, who finished second in 29 minutes and 6 seconds. Deogracius Musobo, also from Uganda Police, placed third, crossing the line in 29 minutes and 7 seconds.

Kibet said he was delighted that his victory has earned him the chance to represent Uganda at the International Cross Country competitions scheduled for 10 January 2026 in Florida, USA.

“I am happy that my body is ready for the upcoming contest, come January,” said Kibet.

He added that his main focus now is improving his speed to ensure he has enough strength from start to finish as he aims to win a gold medal for the country.

In the senior women’s category, Prisons’ Cheptoyek crossed the line in 33 minutes and 16 seconds, finishing ahead of fellow Prisons athlete Rispa Cherop, who clocked 33 minutes and 42 seconds.

UPDF’s Kereen Chemusto came third in 33 minutes and 48 seconds.

Cheptoyek, who said the course was difficult, described her win as an important step towards the international event, adding that she was relishing the opportunity to represent Uganda at the 2026 World Cross Country Championships.

“I will try my best to defend my title by God’s grace,” said Cheptoyek.

Beatrice Ayikoru, the general secretary of the Uganda Athletics Federation, said the event has given the Federation a clear picture ahead of next year’s World Cross Country Championships.

She noted that the UAF will organise another cross-country event in December 2025 at Tororo Golf Course to select the national team.
