President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has commissioned the 20,000-seater Hoima City Stadium in the Bunyoro sub-region, a $130 million facility marking a major milestone in Uganda’s drive to strengthen sports infrastructure for hosting regional, continental and international sporting events.

Museveni was accompanied by the First Lady, who is also the Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Kataha Museveni.

The President said the facility demonstrates Uganda’s readiness to support large-scale developments in the sports and hospitality sectors, citing completed and ongoing projects such as Hoima City Stadium, Akii-Bua Stadium in Lira city, Namboole Stadium and other regional mini stadiums expected to be completed ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations tournament.

Museveni assured Ugandans that more developments are likely as the country scales up oil exploitation programmes to finance major investments in the sports sector.

First Lady Janet Museveni challenged young people in the Bunyoro sub-region to make full use of the new stadium to develop their talents.

She also confirmed that plans are in place to professionally manage the facility so that it generates income and sustains its own maintenance costs.

Sports state minister Peter Ogwang tasked Hoima city leaders with enforcing proper regulations for physical planning developments around the stadium.

The Turkish Ambassador to Uganda, Mehemet Fatih, said the execution of the Hoima City Stadium project facilitated knowledge exchange between Turkish engineers and their Ugandan counterparts, further strengthening relations between the two countries.

The Hoima City Stadium project has been implemented as planned since construction commenced on September 1, 2024, by MS Summa, a Turkish engineering and construction firm, under the supervision of the Ministry of Works.

The project employed 1,067 staff, including 732 Ugandans.

The project scope includes a 20,000-seater main stadium, a 2,000-seater mini arena, a semi-Olympic swimming pool measuring 25 metres by 12.5 metres, a 68 metre by 106 metre stadium and outdoor pitch, stadium and outdoor running tracks, two basketball courts and two volleyball courts, 839 parking spaces with VVIP and VIP suites, a presidential suite and eight elevators.

It also includes 59 sanitary units, 13 facilities for persons with disabilities, four dressing rooms, a 50-seater press conference facility and 10 concession and retail units.
