Uganda Women’s 3000m Steeplechase Olympic gold medallist Peruth Chemutai has become the first recipient of the Fortebet Real Stars Lifetime Award.

Chemutai who clocked 9:01.45 to win gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics last month, was awarded having become the first Ugandan woman ever to win an Olympic medal. She edged out Team USA's Courtney Frerichs (silver) and Kenya's Hyvin Kiyeng (bronze) at the games.

All of Uganda's 10 medals at the Olympic Games had come from men. Uganda’s two Olympic golds before Chemutai’s had come from John Akii-Bua at Munich 1972 and marathon runner Stephen Kiprotich at the London 2012 Olympics.

The 22-year-old was one of four sportsmen who excelled in the month of August to receive the award.

Fellow athlete Joshua Cheptegei who won gold in the 5000m race, basketballer Ishmail Wainright and Express FC midfielder Muzamir Mutyaba received the other monthly accolades for their outstanding performance at the Olympics, at the AfroBasket Championships in Rwanda, and for his three goals in helping Express FC winning the CECAFA Club Championships in Tanzania respectively, in what was an eventful month for Ugandan sport.

Mercy Chelangat picked Chemutai’s award while Uganda Athletics Federation president Dominic Otuchet received Joshua Cheptegei’s gong as Express publicist Peter Tabu picked Mutyaba’s from Fortebet ambassador Alex Muhangi and Real Awards CEO Isaac Mukasa.

“I just want to thank every one of you for inspiring us by giving us these awards and the media for promoting us too,” Chelangat said.

UAF president Otuchet who spoke on behalf of Cheptegei also thanked the organisers and said Cheptegei values the award so much and that he is still committed to doing his best for our country.

“We commend our athletes, we congratulate Cheptegei for his two medals and Chemutai for the gold and congratulate all the other medallists; but also to the entire team for their performance in Tokyo,” Otuchet stated.

“These awards not only inspire the awardees but even many others to work hard to win the same.”

He said all that UAF had achieved was about because of the performance of the athletes despite the challenges they go through.
