Uganda Cranes head coach Paul Put praised his team’s discipline and fighting spirit following a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Botswana in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers on Thursday in Francistown.

“We knew it would be a tough game,” Put said. “Botswana were dangerous with long balls, so we had to stay organised. We had chances to score earlier, and I think the victory was deserved.”

The decisive moment came in the 54th minute when Jude Ssemugabi soared above the defense to head in Allan Okello’s corner, igniting celebrations among the travelling Ugandan fans. Uganda dominated possession in the first half but couldn’t find the breakthrough until after the interval.

Veteran goalkeeper Denis Onyango returned to the starting lineup, bringing calmness and leadership, while defenders Tobby Sibbick and Aziz Kayondo helped secure a clean sheet.

Put highlighted the team’s resilience despite a taxing journey and limited preparation time. “The players showed great character. Denis Onyango’s experience was key. It’s not easy to travel across Africa and perform at this level, but we are happy with the result,” he added.

The win places Uganda second in Group G with 18 points, trailing leaders Algeria by four. With Algeria already qualified, Uganda must win their final match against them in Algiers on October 14 to stand a chance of progressing as one of the best runners-up.

FUFA president Moses Magogo was in attendance alongside Botswana FA President Tariq Babitseng.

Elsewhere in Group G, Algeria defeated Somalia 3–0, and Guinea edged Mozambique 2–1. The current standings are: Algeria (22 points), Uganda (18), Mozambique (15), Guinea (14), Botswana (9), and Somalia (1).

The Cranes now face a daunting trip to the Hocine Aït Ahmed Stadium for a decisive showdown that could define their World Cup destiny.

Table:
1. Algeria 22 pts
2. Uganda 18 pts
3. Mozambique 15 pts
4. Guinea  14 pts
5. Botswana  9 pts
6. Somalia 1 point
