More than 70 Muslim-founded schools are expected to take part in the 12th edition of the UMEA Solidarity Games, scheduled for April 2–6, 2026.
The event will be hosted at Nkoma Secondary School in Mbale District, eastern Uganda.
The games were officially launched at Kibuli Secondary School, where interested participants were advised to begin online registration.
Haji Twahir Kitezaala, the chairperson of the organizing committee, announced that 16 playing grounds within a 1.5-kilometer radius of Nkoma SS have been secured to ensure smooth and convenient competitions.
“The games will be managed in conjunction with technical officials from the respective sports federations and associations,” Kitezaala said.
He highlighted that this year’s theme—‘Faith, Unity and Excellence’—underscores the event's goals: fostering unity among Muslim schools from different sects, improving facilities at the host school, and identifying sports talent.
For the first time, judo has been added to the official program. Kitezaala emphasized the importance of introducing diverse sports in schools, noting that structured development begins at the educational level before progressing to clubs and national teams.
“We are ready to expand the games if we have the resources and support available. Sports can only thrive in the country if they go through the school system,” he added.
Judo is the latest addition, following last year’s inclusion of mind sports like chess and scrabble. These join long-standing disciplines such as men’s and women’s football, netball, badminton, handball, and table tennis.
Despite the growth, organizers revealed that the event still lacks an official sponsor.
“We thank the individual schools that have supported the games, along with Mavid Pharmaceuticals, Aaroms, Graphic Systems, Nirvana Water, and Nkoma SS,” Kitezaala noted.
UMEA Secretary Abubaker Kakembo clarified that only schools founded on Islamic principles are eligible to participate, though players and organizers from different religious backgrounds are welcome.
In the 2024 edition held in Kayunga, Masaka SS claimed the boys’ football title, while Kawempe Muslim took the girls’ accolade. Gombe SS dominated chess and handball in both categories, Green Light Islamic won the netball title, and Kibuli SS excelled in boys’ and girls’ badminton.
