Excitement is building in Kumi District as over 50 teams prepare to compete in the second edition of the Tom Omongole Memorial Volleyball Open Tournament, scheduled for March 22–23 at Kumi Boma Grounds.
Teams from across Teso and Karamoja have confirmed their participation, setting the stage for a highly competitive event.
The two-day annual tournament, organized by the Uganda Volleyball Federation (UVF), the Upper Eastern Regional Volleyball Association, and the Kumi District Volleyball Association, honors the legacy of the late Tom Omongole, a volleyball icon and former president of the UVF.
Cissy Opeede, chairperson of the Kumi District Volleyball Association and head of the tournament’s local organizing committee, expressed enthusiasm for the event. “We are proud to host this tournament in memory of Tom Omongole, who served as UVF president and made significant contributions to volleyball, even while balancing his political career,” she said.
Opeede confirmed that 12 clubs, 6 corporate teams, 14 secondary schools, and 20 primary schools have registered for the tournament. “We are grateful to the Omongole family for initiating this event, which not only identifies talent but also boosts local business,” she added.
Vincent Ingurat, chairperson of the Upper Eastern Volleyball Association, emphasized the tournament’s role in talent development. “This event is crucial for identifying young players who can progress to club-level volleyball. The overwhelming participation reflects the love and respect for the legacy Tom Omongole left behind,” he said.
Ingurat also highlighted the region’s potential for nurturing volleyball talent. “There are many energetic and tall individuals in this region. By providing such opportunities, we can uncover and develop their skills,” he noted.
Winners of the tournament will receive trophies and certificates, adding to the competitive spirit of the event.
