Kitara FC’s prolific striker Denis Omedi has refused to be drawn into title talk despite enjoying the form of his life that has ensured his side remains top of the Uganda Premier League.

And despite winning the Fortebet Real Stars Award for February, he is not about to get excited but is still focused on ensuring his side wins every match in the UPL and the Uganda Cup.

His five goals in the month, a hat trick against UPDF, and a goal each in the victories against KCCA FC and Wakiso Giants; as well as a strike against Gaddafi, in the Stanbic Uganda Cup, ensured he won the monthly award ahead of KCCA FC striker Mohammed Shaban, who netted three in the same month and was nominated alongside him.

NEC FC defender Joseph Dhata was the other nominee in the awards held at the Lazio Restaurant.

“I’m happy to have won this award after missing out on the previous three nominations. I want to thank the sponsors for the recognition,” Omedi said after picking up his award from Fortebet’s Resty Mbatidde.

“Everything has happened for a reason, and it follows bouts of hard work. When I missed out previously, it motivated me to continue working hard and just focus on scoring goals for my team, and I thank God that I have finally gotten it today,” Omedi stated.

This is the biggest award for the net buster, who also won the FUFA Drum Player of the Season and MVP (2023) Awards.

“I just need to remain focused in the remaining ten games in the league, and if all goes well, we can become champions. We are just going to take one game at a time and all my focus is on ensuring we win every game,”

Douglas Mulalira, 20, who won from Kabadi, says the award is a motivation for him and an inspiration to other players in the fraternity.

“I was the best raider, and my performance helped my team, Superior Kabadi Club, win the Champions League unbeaten. Since I started out including with the national team, my game has been up there, and so I’m not surprised with the award,” Mulalira, who beat Annet Kirembe and Rose Nankumba to the award, said.

From rallying, it was Jas Mangat who took the honours, having won the National Rally Championship season opener in Mbarara. He beat Hassan Alwi and Jonas Kansiime to the award while Emily Lekuru was the standout in rugby, ahead of Ivan Kirabo and Syrus Watum.

Henry Zzimbe from the co-sponsors, Jude Colour Solutions, urged the sportspeople to ensure consistency in their performances to win more of the same awards that come with sh500,000 each.
