Uganda Premier League (UPL) holders Vipers SC climbed to the top of the table for the first time this season after securing a 2-0 victory over Mbarara City under the floodlights at St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende, on Tuesday night.
Allan Okello fresh the Africa Cup of Nations duties with the Uganda Cranes in Morocco opened the scoring for Vipers in the 40th minute from the penalty spot before Abdulkarim Watambala sealed the win with a well-taken strike five minutes into the second half, as the Venoms tightened their grip on a crucial home fixture.

The result, coupled with KCCA’s 2-0 defeat away to Police at Kira Road Arena in Kamwokya, saw Vipers leapfrog their title rivals.
KCCA began the day on 26 points but slipped to second place, while Vipers moved to the summit with 27 points from 11 matches.

KCCA have played one more game, having completed 12 fixtures, meaning Vipers could open up a four-point lead at the top of the standings should they claim victory in their game in hand against Kitara, further strengthening their early title defence.
