Last season's Ladies Serie B champions, OBB Ladies Volleyball Club will join their male counterparts in the continental club competition after defeating Sport-S 3 - 1 to win this year's National Volleyball Club Championship at the Iganga Municipal Council Primary School playground on Sunday.
Inspired by a loud home crowd, the champions made a statement of intent by winning the opening two sets but as the game went on, OBB ladies' energy levels started dropping thus losing a set only for head coach Protus Soita to change tactics that helped swing the pendulum back to the home team's advantage.
Team captain Sandra Ikiring, as well as Power attacker Hadijah Otim and setter Jessica Kaida, put up eye-catching performances that saw them dominate the competition entirely.
Ikiring said her team got into this tournament after getting inspired in the last championship at Lugogo that was dominated by Rwandese champions APR Volleyball Club.
Her coach Soita said that the home crowd pushed his team to the finish line.
"We had almost lost morale with so many errors after letting our opponents win the third set but our home cheerful crowd gave us a reason to prove our worth," said Soita.
Like their male counterparts, the win handed the ladies' champions an opportunity to represent the country in the African club championships in Tunisia early next year.
OBB club patron Ahmed Kigundu who doubles as the Federation vice-president commended his team's victory.
"The ladies and men's team have indeed made us proud. We are now going to have enough preparation to take both teams for the African continent champions at a yet-to-be-set date and country," said Kigundu.
Sport-S made an act of sweet revenge and defeated OBB 3-0 to defend the men's title.
Uganda Volleyball Federation president Sadiq Nassiwa pledged to register both teams as the continental champions.
Meanwhile, the ladies' winner received cash prizes of sh 500,000 each from local area investors Ahmed Ajasi and Asuman Mpaata.
