National team player Godfrey Nsubuga has organised a tournament to inspire more youngsters into the sport that has brought him into the limelight.
The two-day event, dubbed the Godfrey Nsubuga Invitational Tournament, will take place at the Lugazi Hills Golf and Country Club in Lugazi on December 20-21.
The event has been made possible by his friends in the US, where he is currently attending college and pursuing a Marketing degree at Winston Salem State University on a golf scholarship.
The 36-hole tournament for the top gross players with handicaps 0-9 in the country has a prize pool of UGX 4 million, which will be shared among the top five players.
“Lugazi is where my story starts, and I want to thank them all for the opportunities they gave us to play golf. The event is open to 30 players who fall in that category, and all those with World Amateur Golf Rankings are automatically invited,” Nsubuga said.
This exciting event will kick off with a special Junior Session on December 20, where all participants will be asked to contribute to the growth of the game by mentoring young golfers at the Mehta Junior Golf Academy.
“My own journey has been shaped by the support of the golfing community, so I’m passionate about inspiring and motivating the youth of Uganda to pursue their golfing dreams,” Nsubuga added.
At 23, Nsubuga has become the first Ugandan to break into the top 200 players in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, and the tournament is a way of giving back to the community that has supported him throughout his journey.
His career has been nothing short of groundbreaking. As the first Ugandan to play in the US Amateur Open (2024), he has also won numerous prestigious titles, including the 2023 Uganda Golf Open, the Tanzania Golf Open, the Entebbe Open, the Nyali Open in Kenya, the Kericho Tea Fields Championship, the Equity Open, and the Kakira Open.
Nsubuga is also set to play in the All-America Patriots Golf Championship on December 27-31 in Arizona.
