KCB Nkumba Club President, Mr. Ssennyondo Godwin, has hailed the Nkumba Volleyball Open as a vital platform for nurturing volleyball talent in Uganda, emphasizing its role in offering equal opportunities for players to compete.

“Such competitions allow coaches to assess player performance, especially after a long break,” Ssennyondo noted.

He added that the tournament was originally designed to promote Nkumba University while creating an affordable and fair competitive space for players.

“It’s also a platform where women can compete equally under both club and institutional categories,” he said.

The 27th edition of the annual tournament recently concluded at Nkumba University in Entebbe, drawing a diverse mix of participants including clubs, corporate teams, universities, and institutions.

KCB Nkumba marked their return with a commanding 3–1 win (23-25, 25-12, 25-17, 25-13) over Kampala University in the women’s final. In the men’s category, Nemostars swept hosts Nkumba University 3–0 to claim the trophy.

“It’s an emotional moment playing in a tournament so deeply tied to our club’s history, having evolved from Nkumba University,” Ssennyondo reflected. “Winning the championship is a huge morale boost for the girls. We used the event to gauge our fitness ahead of the new season.”

The men’s competition featured 13 teams: Nkumba Navy, Lakers Entebbe VC, Tai VC, Mutungo VC, Bee Line VC, Nemostars VC, Kampala University VC, Sky VC, IUEA, Kampala Royal VC, Ntinda VC, Wazeei VC, and Cobap Uganda VC.

Eight teams competed in the women’s category: Nkumba University VC, Mutungo VC, Nemo Ladies, Kampala University VC, Ntinda VC, Kampala Royal Ladies VC, Cobap Uganda VC, and KCB Nkumba VC.

The corporate section saw enthusiastic participation from Mogo Loans, Nkumba, Lakers Wazeei, Hotel Africana, and Emergency–Children’s Surgical Hospital.

Institutional representation included Nkumba VC and Mildmay in the schools’ category.

“The Nkumba Open remains one of Uganda’s premier volleyball events—promoting the sport, preparing teams, and nurturing future talent,” Ssennyondo concluded.
