There was an air of excitement in Soroti as hundreds of football fans turned up to watch the finals of the Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba (MK) football tournament.
The three weeks tournament which kicked off on July 26 at the sub-county level across the Teso sub-region saw Serere and Ngora districts tussle it out in the finals.
Ngora clinched victory in the finals of the MK Cup tournament, securing the championship title with a 2-1 win against Serere district at Soroti city stadium.
Ngora district triumph was highlighted by their striker Micheal Olinga.
In the finals, Olinga’s outstanding efforts led to the team’s victory by scoring an opening goal in the 13th minute of the first half before Micheal Olinga scored the second goal in the 65th minute.
Gabriel Emesu managed to score a consolation goal for Ngora district which came in the 86th minute of the championship.
Olupot’s exceptional contributions during the tournament earned him a golden boot as the best scorer with 9 goals.
Their victory in the first edition of the Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba football tournament earned them a cash prize of shs 25 million and an overall trophy.
Serere district which took first runner-up in the tournament earned shs 20m and Soroti city in won shs 15m
“I want to thank the almighty God for his love for Ngora, I remember during the first edition of the M7 cup in 2011 after winning Tororo in penalties shootouts, but this time again God has given as Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba Cup,” Seth Omoding, Ngora district coach.
Omoding praised his team for their exceptional performance and expressed their determination to defend the title in the forthcoming years' competition.
The tournament coordinator Isaac Olupot congratulated Muhoozi for standing with the youth of Teso in bringing all the youth together to showcase their talents in football.
According to Olupot Teso districts such as Amuria, Katakwi, Kapelebyong, Soroti District, Soroti City, Kalaki, Kaberamaido, Kachumbala, Pallisa, Tororo, Bukedea, Ngora, Kumi District, Kumi Municipality and Butebu took part in the tournament.
The prestigious final was graced by Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who not only attended the match but also personally awarded prizes to the winners. Gen Muhoozi Kainerugabaak.
At Soroti city stadium Muhoozi was accompanied by Minister for Fisheries Hellen Adoa Abeku, state minister for Sports Peter Ogwang and other political leaders.
