Newly elected Uganda Golf Union president, Dr. Jackson Were has promised to re-activate regional tournaments at various clubs as a means of promoting the sustainability of the sport at upcountry courses.
Were will serve his first two-year term alongside Anthony Agaba the former secretary in the outgoing executive, Dr. Fred Magala (secretary), Andrew Atuhaire (treasurer), and committee members Paul Habyarimana and Joseph Okudi.
He asserts that more emphasis will be put on the implementation of the union’s strategic plan and the main areas of focus will be continued lobbying of the central government and private sector to support the sport through sponsorships of their activities and development of junior golfers to compete locally, regionally and eventually to the international stage.
Were also plans to attract more professional golf tournaments in Uganda which will enable our professionals to become more competitive in events like the Magical Kenya Open.
He is also going to ensure the training of the different stakeholders in the sport of golf as well as attracting corporate companies to sponsor union activities across all clubs.
“I will continue working with the outgoing and the past leadership of the Union to further strengthen our systems and further grow the sport as a whole,” Were stated.
“I will work towards building partnerships with entities that are in the interest of building and growing our sports while adhering to the vision and mission of the Union. We are going to ensure the Union adds value to each golfing member individually and to the sport collectively through our support and participation,”
Were is a medical microbiologist currently serving at the National Referral Hospital Mulago as the Head of Clinical Laboratory Services, providing technical and managerial leadership in the delivery of clinical laboratory services. He is also a visiting lecturer at the Mbarara University of Science and Technology in the Department of Medical Laboratory Science, Faculty of Medicine.
Were has served at various levels of leadership in the administration of the sport. He started as captain at Mbarara Sports Club for two terms before being elected as an executive committee member of the UGU and before he served as vice president for the last two years to Moses Matsiko in the outgoing committee.
As the vice-president Were has successfully directed tournaments that included the prestigious Uganda Opens 2022&2023, All Africa Junior Championship 2023, Africa Region IV Championships and the recently concluded Victoria Cup Championship 2023.
