The JT Lady Jaguars are gearing up for a major push in the 2026 National Basketball League (NBL), with the Kira-based side determined to win their first league title after an impressive run to the championship round last season.
Strategic signings and a settled squad have given the team renewed belief.
Former UCU Lady Canons forward Bridget Aber is the standout addition ahead of the new campaign, and she said her decision to join the Jaguars went beyond basketball.
“Choosing the Lady Jaguars was about more than basketball. Most teams in the NBL have at least one former UCU Lady Canon on their roster, which shows how good the club is,” Aber said.
“I chose the Lady Jaguars because I know most of the players. That gave me an instant connection to the team, its culture and unity. The support and positive environment at The Den felt right. This team is not just about winning. The Jaguars lift each other and make an impact beyond the court,” she added.
Aber began playing basketball in 2016 at Kalinabiri Secondary School before continuing her development at Exodus College School in 2017.
“I always choose places that help me grow as a player and as a person. The Jaguars push me out of my comfort zone and give me a chance to make a difference on and off the court.”
Last season, the Lady Jaguars produced strong performances but struggled to score consistently in the paint. While Mercy Batamuliza dominated the boards, Sarah Ageno often found herself operating on the perimeter.
Head coach Sudi Ulanga has addressed that gap with the signing of Aber and the addition of promising young talent Amy Chan from YMCA Lady Hamsters.
Chan brings versatility, can operate in multiple positions, and stretches defences with her three-point shooting. Her height and rebounding ability are expected to add balance to the team.
The Jaguars have also retained a strong core. Brenda Kayaga continues at shooting guard, Shakirah Nanvubya remains the floor general at point guard, and Azida Nabayunga returns to her preferred wing role.
Batamuliza remains central to the team’s ambitions. After missing the 2022 season due to an ACL injury, she returned in 2023 and enjoyed a standout campaign last season, finishing as the league’s top rebounder and earning several accolades, including Kira8 MVP and NBL Defensive Player of the Year.
Her continued growth adds experience and strength to the Jaguars’ inside game.
With a blend of continuity and new additions, the Lady Jaguars appear well placed to return to the championship stage and potentially take the final step this time around.
