Uganda Ladies Golf Union (ULGU) went to polls last week to elect new office bearers for the union for the next one year.

The elections saw only one post contested for the highest position of the union, the president, where Doreen Mwesigye garnered 13 votes to beat Rita Apell, who got 9 votes for the union president position.

The rest of the union executive positions had no contest as the successful candidates went through unopposed.

Godlive Nayebare was among the unopposed candidates and the former Mbarara women golfers captain, who had served in the past regime as general secretary, sees herself elevated to the vice president position, a role she welcomes with joy.

“This is an elevation of course and I have many strategies alongside my president, and we believe we are going to take union interests to another level. I am very elated to be voted into this position and I was very humbled to have served diligently and genuinely as secretary general and now as vice president, this comes with many challenges,” Nayebare said.

Looking at what new roles are in the new position, Nayebare feels pumped up to do the needful for the betterment of the union.

“I have to be in charge of tournaments, the junior golf team development programs, and I have to make sure that all tournaments run smoothly and together with the president and the entire executive, the sky isn’t even going to be the limit, I am excited, I am warmed and this is a promotion,” She said.

By the union’s constitution, the new executive serves for a length of one year but can be re-elected into office for the second year.

This is what happened with the outgoing Anne Abeja executive that was elected into office in 2021 but was re-mandated to serve for the second year last year.

In her words, immediate past president Abeja hailed her executive for the dedicated service and thanked the union members for availing a concussive atmosphere that helped her to serve diligently.

“It is with great humility that we bow out and hand over the mantle to a new Leader and members of the ULGU Executive Committee (EXCO) that were elected. I congratulate the new team and pledge to work with them as Immediate Past President to continue the journey of developing the game of golf. I equally congratulate the outgoing EXCO that I worked with to deliver on the Union’s strategic plans. I am eternally grateful to you. Thank you for all the sacrifices and hard work. We did great,” Abeja signed out.

Mwesigwa and her new executive will be tasked to keep the union strategies going straight in progress, especially the junior golfers' programs.
