The President of the Uganda Lacrosse Association (ULA), Liberty Twesiime, has called upon well-wishers to come on board and support the national lacrosse team, which has begun preparations ahead of the 2026 African Sixes Lacrosse Games.
Speaking to Vision Sport, Twesiime cited lack of sufficient funding as a major challenge currently affecting the national team as it intensifies preparations for the international competition.
“The Uganda Lacrosse team is already preparing men and women for the contest scheduled to take place from December 1 to 5 at St. Stithians College in Johannesburg, South Africa, but has no substantial funding base. We are excited to have a timeline to work with, and we call upon the government through its departments to support the team’s Olympic qualification journey for both the women’s and men’s national teams,” Twesiime added.
According to Twesiime, the men’s team has performed well in previous international appearances, including the World Lacrosse encounters in Colorado, USA (2014); Netanya, Israel (2018); Limerick, Ireland (U-21 men); and recently in San Diego, California, USA.
He noted that the 2026 African Sixes Lacrosse Championship will also serve as the primary continental qualifier for the 2027 World Lacrosse Sixes Championship in Tokyo, Japan.
“This will be the first step on the road to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games in the United States of America,” he said.
Hosts South Africa will be joined by Uganda, Kenya, as well as West African nations Ghana and Ivory Coast at the championships, which will include both men’s and women’s competitions.
The top finishers from the men’s and women’s events will each advance to the 2027 World Lacrosse Sixes Championships.
