The Namibia Deputy Prime Minister Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has been impressed by the facilities at the newly constructed Nakivubo Stadium.

While leading a delegation on a guided tour of the stadium, Netumbo also endorsed Nakivubo as a stadium that will comfortably host the high-profile 2027 Africa Nations Cup.

“I was very much impressed by the facilities at the stadium. The players are taken care of, the staff is taken care of, the coaches are taken care of, sanitation and other facilities around the stadium are impressive,” she said.

Netumbo added; “What impressed me more is that I have learned that this is 100% local from the design, to the contractor, and to the material that has been used. The people who work here are all local people. This shows that Africa can make it.”

Netumbo, who is also the Minister for International Relations and Cooperation was among others accompanied on the tour by the Kampala State Minister, Kabuye Kyoffatogabye, the Honorary Council of Namibia in Uganda Godfrey Kirumira, the Namibian ambassador to Tanzania Lebbius Tobias and other senior Namibian government officials, proposed an international match between Uganda and Namibia in the new stadium.

“I recommend sports ministries in other countries including Namibia to visit this stadium. I think Africa can do it and Uganda can comfortably host the Africa Cup of Nations because this stadium is self-contained with even a hotel where players can lodge as they practice to familiarise with the pitch,” she said.

“But I leave it to our young people because sports is a unifier, no politics and I am sure they can do it. Ham, please push this positive energy to young people to ensure that we realise the agenda of 2026,” she said. She tasked Kirumira to work with Kiggundu to promote sports tourism between Uganda and Namibia.

Apart from football which is the main activity for the stadium, other sports like basketball, boxing, volleyball, pool, table tennis, and netball are also catered for inside the multi-purpose stadium that is expected to be commissioned by President Yoweri Museveni.

Businessman Hamis Kiggundu, who redeveloped the stadium, took the premier and the entire delegation around the stadium. He pointed out that on completion, appreciated the Premier’s visit to the stadium.

“We are so humbled and honored to have a person of such magnitude come here to visit the facility and we feel warm-hearted that you have appreciated the facility. I pledge to make it my responsibility to ensure that one of the opening matches in this stadium will be Uganda vs Namibia, and if given a chance, we shall come and implement this even in Namibia,” he said.

Kiggundu disclosed that he employs more than 10,000 young people directly and many more others indirectly.
