Kruthum Nalumansi’s dedication to badminton has started paying off and she will be one of Uganda’s representatives at this year’s Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games in Germany.
The 23-year-old Uganda Christian University (UCU) bachelor's in procurement and supply chain management student will compete in the singles, doubles, and mixed doubles alongside Jordan Abo from MUBS as well as Augustus Owiny and Fadilah Shamika from Victoria University.
Nalumansi has dedicated her sporting life solely to badminton, and it is no wonder she has begun reaping accolades from the sport.
She won gold at the recent 7th edition of the FASU Badminton Challenge held at Makerere University, reached the quarter-finals at the Botswana International last year, and also secured gold at last year's East Africa University Games in Maseno, Kenya. Her journey began in 2015 when her dad bought her a racket.
She started playing barefoot at Mariam High School before transferring to Kibuli Secondary School in 2016. From Kibuli, she moved on to Nabisunsa and then attended MUBS, where she earned a degree in procurement and supply chain management.
She is currently pursuing her master's program at UCU on a full bursary, which she is enjoying. She aims to improve upon her round of 32 finish at her first international FISU event in Chengdu, China, in 2023. Coach Kirabo has been an inspiration for the 23-year-old athlete.
“He always encourages me, even when I lose matches I should have won. We correct mistakes during training, and he motivates me not to give up, often supporting me with equipment as well,” Nalumansi said.
Kirabo has been instrumental in pushing her to go further. Initially, she participated in various sports during her primary school years but realized that she did not enjoy contact sports. Instead, she chose to focus on individual sports and has never looked back since. Despite having numerous opportunities to try other sports, she has remained committed to badminton.
