Mustapha Mukasa targets 2026 rally glory

After an impressive outing at the Busiika Sprint of Champions behind the wheel of Musa Ssegaabwe’s Mitsubishi Evo 9, speculation has grown that Dr. Mustapha Mukasa may be considering acquiring another rally car as a backup option.

What many overlooked, however, is that the “crazy fast” doctor contested the opening round in Ssegaabwe’s Evo 9, a performance that turned heads across the paddock.

Mukasa, who finished runner-up in the 2024 season, has vowed to return stronger in 2026 after mechanical setbacks once again derailed his championship push. The Equity Bank–sponsored driver remains determined to mount a sustained title challenge.

In recent weeks, Mukasa has been spotted putting in intense training sessions around the Mukono plantations as he lays early groundwork for the 2026 campaign. His focus is clear: the ultimate prize.

“I’m not scared of anyone, even with many drivers acquiring stronger machines,” Mukasa said. “I want to give this Mitsubishi another chance before we think of any other car.”

With 2026 expected to be one of the most competitive seasons yet featuring powerful machinery such as the Škoda Fabia, Ford Fiesta, Evo 10s, and Toyota Yaris, Mukasa believes the growing diversity is a positive sign for the sport.

“This really excites me,” he added with a laugh. “At one point Subarus were dominating not only here but across the continent. Now we have Škodas coming through, Ford Fiestas, Evo 10s, Yaris, and who knows, maybe I might come up with something better than all of those.”

Following the recently concluded Sprint of Champions, won by Duncan Mubiru, attention now shifts to the season opener in February, where all eyes will be on Mukasa and his quest to finally clinch the big gong.
