Mbarara City FC has appointed Simon Peter Mugerwa as their new head coach, with just one month remaining to the kickoff of the 2025/26 Star Times Uganda Premier League season.
This appointment comes on the heels of the team's interim coaching arrangement under Zaidi Byekwaso, who took over following the untimely departure of Charles Livingston Mbabazi before the conclusion of the last season.
Mugerwa, a seasoned coach with a wealth of experience in Ugandan football, has signed a two-year contract with the Ankole Lions. His primary objective with the team is to ensure their survival in the league and subsequently compete effectively in tournaments such as the Stanbic Uganda Cup.
This appointment marks another return for Mugerwa to Uganda's top-tier league, mere months after his exit from Police FC in April this year. At Police FC, Mugerwa's tenure was cut short due to what was described as poor performance, a situation that led to his dismissal after just two seasons.
Before his stint at Police FC, Mugerwa had previously honed his coaching skills with Bright Stars FC. Additionally, he served as the assistant coach to Douglas Bamweyana at SC Villa, one of Uganda's most storied clubs.
Currently, Mugerwa is also handling Kyaggwe FC in the prestigious Masaza Cup tournament. Under his guidance, Kyaggwe FC is leading the Muganzirwazza group with 12 points. Mugerwa's coaching prowess is further underscored by his successes in the Masaza Cup, having led Bulemeezi to victory in 2019 and Busiro FC to triumph in 2022.
