This year’s Mbarara Rally not only left motorsport enthusiasts craving for more but also brought immense joy to the business community, which thrived during the three-day spectacle in the bustling western city.

Fans flocked to the Mwesigwa Resort arena as early as 9:00 am on Friday to witness the thrilling super special stage. The double circuit challenge, which paired drivers in electrifying head-to-head races, kept the crowd on the edge of their seats.

Despite the swirling dust, the scorching sun, and the heat clinging to their skin, fans braved the elements to watch their favourite drivers tackle the demanding course of roundabouts and tight corners.

The pairings brought an extra layer of excitement, including Aine Sodo vs Abdul Kateete, Musa Ssegabwe against Odeon Tumwebaze, Faisal Kayira taking on Peter Kalule, and hometown hero Yasin Mukasa battling Adolphe Nshimirimana.

A crowd favourite was the match-up between Michael Mukula Jr and eventual champion Ponsiano Lwakataka, while the Ford duel of Yasin Nasser and Ronald Ssebuguzi kept fans cheering non-stop.

The drivers further thrilled spectators with daring manoeuvres, especially their jumps over humps along the route.

On the business front, vendors experienced booming sales, with high demand for snacks and drinks. Everything from grapes, roasted maize, and sugarcane to water, sodas, beers, and full meals contributed to a festive atmosphere.

"I have made money; I sold all my sugarcane, and I am happy. I can't wait for another event coming," said Moses Mugizi, a sugarcane vendor.

However, the rally was not without tragedy. On day two, a spectator standing far in the designated safety area lost their life during the Kanyaryeru-Sanga section. A rally car lost control after hitting a hump, veering into a group of spectators and claiming one life.

Meanwhile, businesses in the city centre reported a windfall. Hotels, lodges, bars, boda bodas, and even medical facilities enjoyed a significant boost in revenue, taking full advantage of the influx of visitors.

Next up is the Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally, which is confirmed for May in Mbarara. The business community is already gearing up for another round of impressive gains as they prepare to welcome fans and participants alike.
