MAK RUN 2024
Proceeds from this year’s Makerere Run on August 18 will go towards equipping the Support Centre for Students with Disabilities at Makerere University.
Makerere University vice-chancellor, Barnabas Nawangwe disclosed this at Makerere in his appreciation speech at a function where DFCU Bank committed sh40m to this year’s run.
“This run is very good for our students and staff because it keeps them fit. But the most unique part of it is that we are going to run to raise resources to support our Centre for Students with Disabilities," Nawangwe noted.
“We want to equip the disability support centre and make it “a One stop Centre” so that our students get service in one place instead of inconveniencing them by moving to different offices looking for service,” Nawangwe explained.
The run with the theme ‘Run to support students with disabilities' will have participants competing in the 21km, 10km, 5km races and 3km wheelchair races.
He added that RUN has several benefits that include participants getting the opportunity to interact with different corporations.
The centre located in the Frank Kalimuzo building requires a lot of equipment for people with disabilities to use and which is very expensive.
The bank’s executive director Kate K. Kiiza urged the public to come and support this noble cause by participating in the Run.
“As a bank celebrating 60 years of existence, it is our responsibility to support such corporate social activities that focus on supporting the public,” Kiiza said.
She urged other corporate brands to emulate DFCU and support this noble cause.
Makerere University sports principal Peninah Kabenge said that the previous three editions had proceeds going to the setting up of an accomplished student centre.
Kabenge added that as a university they are committed to using sports as a mobilising factor as they grow sports in the university.
