Table tennis prodigy Imran Luwooza lit up Uganda’s debut at the inaugural African School Games in Algeria, securing two commanding victories on Saturday at the Ali Mendjeli Sports Arena in Constantine.
Luwooza began his campaign with a straight-set triumph (11–9, 11–7, 11–8) over Algeria’s Abdelhine Merouane, followed by a clinical win against Seychelles’ Abel Athan Lester. His unbeaten run earned him the top spot in Group 2 with four points and a ticket to the quarterfinals.
His standout performance was a welcome boost for Team Uganda, which endured a rocky start in other disciplines.
In men’s 3x3 basketball, Uganda suffered a 13–7 defeat to Ghana in the opener, before falling 15–9 to regional rivals Rwanda in a tightly contested match in Annaba. The women's 3x3 basketball and beach volleyball squads also faced early exits after heavy losses.
In badminton, Uganda edged Tunisia 55–48 but couldn’t sustain momentum, falling to Ghana (55–43) and Algeria (55–36) in consecutive matches.
On the football pitch, Uganda’s Group A journey is set to begin against Tunisia at CS Constantine Stadium. Representing the nation is Buddo Secondary School—the reigning USSSA champions—coached by Richard Malinga.
With Luwooza’s early brilliance setting the tone, Team Uganda remains hopeful for a resurgence across events as the continental competition gathers steam.
